How to Decide if You Would Be A Good Medical Billing Professional

We see them all the time online and in commercials on TV – medical billing professional training programs.  They are pretty regularly pushed as an excellent at-home job opportunity; and for many, they are exactly that.  But is this the right opportunity for you?  Read on to find out.

Deciding if a Career in Medical Billing is Right for You

Before you can decide on any career, you need to become familiar with it.  You might think you know what a career in medical billing entails, but do you really?  Take the time to research the job.  Look it up online.  Read articles and information from medical billing programs, and check out the sites and forums developed by real, live medical billers.  Even register in a few and ask the people there about what they do, and their experiences in the field.

In addition to understanding the tasks that a medical biller undertakes, you should learn about the process for billing within a medical office.  This is a process that starts at the patient intake level, which much later in the process will come to you, the biller, but every step of that process impacts the job that you will do and how you do it.  Familiarizing yourself with this process will give you some insight.

What Medical Billing Professionals Do, In A Nutshell

Very succinctly, a medical biller performs any and all tasks involved in collecting payment on behalf of the medical office, from both private paying patients and from insurance companies.  In its most general terms, the biller is provided with a coded “superbill” (coded often by a medical coding specialist, but sometimes by the physician) that they then have to break down and apply charges to, and submit to the party responsible for payment.  Of course, that is a very slimmed-down version of events, but that is the very basics of what a medical biller does.

Essential Skills of the Successful Medical Biller

Of course, to get from point A to point B there are a number of skills the good medical biller will possess.  These are the skills that you will need to have or to develop if you think you will be a good medical biller.  The essential skills of a good medical billing specialist include:

Being detail-oriented
Being good at multi-tasking
Possessing good math and data skills
A good working knowledge of software programs used in the industry
Having a good understanding of the billing and payment process
Becoming familiar with medical codes and how to apply them
Being trustworthy
Being willing to communicate with both clients and payees
The ability to work independently

Of course, many of these skills are skills that can and will be learned in a good medical billing training program, but if you enjoy working independently, can perform a variety of tasks and steps to complete a project, and enjoy a job that challenges you to “use your brain” while providing an important service, medical billing may just be the right job for you.  To learn more about it, it is recommended that you tap into the resources of a medical billing training program, which will provide even more insight into what it takes to be a medical biller.
